Uncontrolled privatisation of various essential social services has grown in the last two decades, whether it be prisons, health, water, or land, with devastating impacts for the enjoyment of human rights without discrimination. Education, which had been relatively saved until now, has become in the last years the new area in which investors are rushing into to make profit, with the support of major development agencies and international financial institutions.

Further discussion and dialogue are needed within international human rights circles to shed light on these issues, and to highlight people's experiences where privatisation in education is taking place. To help advance the discussion, the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (GI-ESCR) and its partners, together with the Portuguese Mission will be convening a side event during the June 2014 session of the Human Rights Council to be held at 12:00 on 12 June. The Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education will speak at the event, together with organisations from various countries on the front lines of the fight for the right to education who will share their stories and discuss how the human rights framework and mechanisms can engage in and respond to this issue.

The Right to Education Project (RTE) will participate in the event and we invite you to join the conversation on this key emerging issue!

When: 12th June 2014, 12pm
